Thread Painted Mini Art Quilts
Friday 10-5pm

Create a miniature (8" or smaller) art quilt using freemotion machine embroidery and hand embellishments. Students will learn the art of thread painting, using a variety of stitching and layering techniques, to form a central image, then add details with hand stitching, embellishments, found objects and whatever else they can think of!

Supply List:
sewing machine in good working order and various feet:
regular sewing; darning; open toe embroidery; walking
sewing machine manual
paper, pencil & eraser
small scissors or thread snips
fabric scissors
rotary cutter & cutting mat
quilt ruler (6 or 6 1/2" x 24" or 4 1/2" x 14" or so and a smaller one if you have it)
iron or mini iron and pressing pad
marking pencils, both light and dark (optional)
wooden machine embroidery hoop (9” or smaller) - make sure it's meant for machine embroidery and not hand embroidery
stabilizer of choice (optional)
6 - 8 fat quarters of background fabric (bring a variety of colors and small
patterns, and some extra pieces for experimenting)
cotton or bamboo batting
backing fabric
a wide variety of rayon or cotton threads (in suitable colors for your subject
of choice)
embroidery weight thread, in colors to match rayon and
cotton threads (optional - for bobbins)
Pearl Crown Rayon, Pearl Cotton, Décor or any other heavy thread (optional -
for bobbin work)
cotton or rayon threads to match specialty threads
embroidery floss (optional)
extra bobbins
75/11 embroidery needles
75/11 quilting needles
hand sewing and hand embroidery needles
beading needles (optional)
thimble
straight pins
zip closure bag (optional - for bobbin drawing - to catch any pieces of the
bobbin case that might fall off while we’re messing with it—don’t
worry, we’ll be careful!)
small screw driver (either the one that came with your machine or a jewelry size)
quilting gloves (optional but recommended)
embellishments (optional) - beads, sequins, small charms, etc.
specialty materials (optional) - Angelina fibers, foil + foil glue or fusible web,
Fantasy Film and whatever else you can think of!
photos or images for inspiration - try to plan ahead and decide what your
subject will be, so you can bring the appropriate colors of fabrics and
threads

remember we're working small, so no need to bring a ton of batting or backing fabric!
